Title: Bitter dispute settled
Post by Forum Admin on Apr 7th, 2004, 8:59am

The BBC has reached a settlement with the "Bush House Two", Adli Hawwari and Abdul Hadi Jiad.

They were dismissed a year ago from the Arabic Service after a long history of complaints about the way they had been treated by the BBC.

Mr Hawwari, 47, brought 12 cases since joining the BBC in 1987. Dr Jiad, 50, joined in 1991 and brought five cases.

This is the text of a statement from the NUJ:

"Former BBC World Service producers Adli Hawwari and Dr Abdul Hadi Jiad together with the NUJ have today reached agreement with the BBC in relation to their complaints against the Corporation.

The BBC acknowledges that in the departure of Mr Hawwari and Dr Jiad it did not follow its normal procedures.

Mr Hawwari and Dr Jiad are pleased that a just settlement has been reached.

The NUJ is pleased that the BBC has confirmed it places importance on adhering to agreed procedures.

The BBC and NUJ have agreed to continue to work together in relation to staff, their rights and agreed procedures. Both the BBC and the NUJ are committed to equality of opportunity for all.

Adli Hawwari and Abdul Hadi Jiad have withdrawn their outstanding claims. They have now decided to pursue other career options outside the BBC.

They also thank the NUJ for their tremendous support and their assistance in achieving a just and important settlement to resolve the outstanding issues. The parties have agreed there will be no further comment."
