Fortunately Moira Waugh, her much loved sister who lives in Florida arrived in time to spend a few days with Tina and she had many friends visiting and phoning her during her long stay at St Thomas’s. Moira is at the moment staying with a very old friend Liz in Lewes  and when she has come to terms with all this she will no doubt let us know more. We believe Tina’s funeral will be in Tunbridge Wells but we don’t yet know when. There is an address for sending cards which I will share if you contact me. She was head of BBC Manchester personnel until 1981. She was 36 days shy of her 105th birthday. She started as at the Watcher transmitter on Lines in the 1940s before moving to engineering then Manchester and ultimately into Administration at NBH Manchester. Sadly, she had limited memory towards the end of her life. Her career with the BBC did mean a lot to her, because in those moments of memory she did remember the names of the engineers under her watchful eye in Vision test, Camera test, OB crews and others based out of New Broadcasting House on Oxford road. Peter devoted more than 35 years to the BBC, building a distinguished career in radio and television journalism defined by his belief in fair, accurate and impartial reporting. From helping launch The World at One to producing, directing, reporting and presenting BBC Television News, journalism was not simply his profession but his passion. Away from broadcasting, his greatest joy was his long and happy marriage to Isobel, his wife of more than 50 years, and the family life they shared. Born in 1934, Peter grew up in Woodford Green, Essex, and experienced evacuation during the Second World War. A gifted musician, he remained devoted to church music throughout his life, singing in choirs and playing the organ. After leaving Chigwell School, he completed National Service with the Royal Corps of Signals, where his fascination with radio technology deepened. That fascination had begun during childhood illnesses that left him confined to bed listening to the BBC. Joining the Corporation seemed an ambitious dream, but in 1956, after three rigorous interviews, he began his career as a studio manager in BBC Radio. His ten years in radio cemented his love of journalism. He helped devise and produce the pioneering news programme The World at One and was one of its first reporters when it launched in 1965. In 1969 he moved to BBC Television News, where he worked as a producer, director, interviewer, presenter and newsreader, covering many of the major political and social events of the post-war era. The former BBC, ITV and Sky News journalist was 68. "It is with great sadness that the family of Dermot Murnaghan announces that he passed away at home in North London earlier this morning," his family said in a statement posted to his X account. "He died peacefully with his family at his side." A fixture on British TV news across five decades, he presented flagship programmes including the ITV Evening News and the BBC News at Six and Ten. Murnaghan was a main presenter of BBC Breakfast from September 2002 to December 2007 and also hosted quiz show Eggheads. When he revealed his diagnosis last summer, he said he was "responding positively" to treatment and "feeling well". He became an outspoken advocate for men to get tested for the condition. "Needless to say my message to all men over 50, in high risk groups, or displaying symptoms, is get yourself tested and campaign for routine prostate screening by the NHS," he said. "Early detection is crucial. And be aware, this disease can sometimes progress rapidly without obvious symptoms." His family thanked the public "for the many, many kind messages of goodwill that he received over the last year since his diagnosis of Stage IV prostate cancer and his subsequent campaigning to raise awareness for screening programmes for the disease". Murnaghan started his career at local newspapers, before later moving to Channel 4 News and fronting ITV shows including The Big Story and the News at 10 from 1993 to 1997, and the channel's Evening News and Nightly News from 1999 to 2001. He moved to the BBC in 2002, as one of the main hosts of BBC Breakfast, the Six O'Clock News and the Ten O'Clock News. He presented Eggheads for 11 years from 2003, and was one of the faces of Sky News from 2007 to 2023. Sky News presenter Anna Botting said he would "always be a legend of news". Former Prime Minister David Cameron, who has also been treated for prostate cancer, said the presenter's decision to highlight the importance of testing will have helped many men. "I think it's really important that Dermot came out in the way that he did - as in his broadcasting life, he did it with incredible clarity and just simplicity," Lord Cameron told Sky News. "And as someone who was so well-known to people through his broadcasting career over 40 years, it will have had a huge impact." Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said Murnaghan was a "broadcasting legend who we have lost far too soon". "His tireless advocacy, encouraging more men to get tested for prostate cancer, will no doubt have saved lives."
