Hello, Tom Hidderley here. I joined the BBC in Bush House in 1964 as a TechOp. I was assigned to TO course #22 in 1965 and returned to LCR as a TO. We were converted to SMs in 1967 and I left in 1970 for the Anglo American film unit in Zambia on a five year contract. I moved to Toronto Canada in 1975 and have been freelancing here ever since. I finally retired in 2017 and am enjoying life, as an expat, here in London Ontario.

A question for any BBC pensioners living outside of the UK.

I read (in previous comments) that "the BBC Pension can be paid anywhere". This seems entirely reasonable, but can I ask how you went about getting your BBC pensions paid gross?
And were BBC Pensions "helpful" in this respect - or did you have to provide reams of paperwork to HMRC to convince them to let BBC Pensions not deduct Income Tax from your payments?
I've recently moved to the Isle of Man and will need to declare my BBC pension to the authorities here - and then pay all taxes due "in advance"! - so I'm rather keen not to have to be paying Income Tax to HMG as well! As we moved part way into the UK's Tax year, getting my UK Tax payments returned for the part of the year we've been out of the UK will be a job and a half I'm sure, but that's a different story.

New wills - compliant with Manx law - have declarations that my wife and I are now "domiciled" in the Isle of Man, and we've had to move all bank accounts over here to properly comply. BTW, this 'domiciled status' appears rather more important than I'd ever realised!

My State pension is now paid by Manx Social Services rather than UK's. [My wife's State Pension seems to be taking considerably longer to move here!]. But once that's done, then we're (hopefully) beyond the grasp of HMRC when our "final moments" come, and our estates can then pass on completely in accordance with our wishes.

"there will be an alternative way of transmitting TV programmes from maker to viewer by that time."

I agree. Most likely, using fibre broadband - paid for by taking the BBC's license-fee money - again!

I left the BBC in 2003 but still have my pension with them. Does anyone know a good IFA for off-shoring my pension?
Thanks,
Mark Mockett (BBC News 1989-2003)
Hi Roy
Have seen you have been trying to Skype me but have been busy.
I used to have a Slingbox for two years here in Cape Town. The Base unit was in Essex. Worked OK but now I find a better method re quality and catch up etc.
I use a VPN (available for less than 5 pds a month which makes me look as if I am in the UK).I then watch BBCI Player, ITV Player, Ch 4 etc using an Apple TV box to put it on my Samsung TV. I use an Ipad/ Iphone to control it on the TV. Quality is excellent in HD when available. Catch up never buffers and Live very rarely. Very often watch it straight on the Ipad where ever I am
Skype me later Thursday/ Friday before 3pm your time or leave your Skype on Do you have Facetime which is better. Yes I do pay a BBC Licence
Can you PM me you email address
