We have received this message about a London Meeting of Sound Staff.

BBC Sound Staff Social Club Drop-In, 26th May 2026 from 2pm

I’ve booked a spot in the BBC Club in London’s Broadcasting House for a no pressure drop-in meet-up for anyone who has worked in sound in the BBC over the years. Come alone or in groups and meet up with people you knew or maybe people who worked in a totally different area of the BBC. You’re sure to have some fun conversations! Some of the current sound crew will be there too, and we’re looking forward to meeting you all.

If you’d like to attend please RSVP to me at eveyanderson@gmail.com for more logistical details. This is intended to be the first of an occasionally repeated event, so even if you’re not free for this one email me to keep in touch about future similar events.

Everyone’s welcome from 2pm, and the last time we did something similar we found that people stayed for hours chatting, so if you come along later that’s fine too.

A friend of mine is searching for a capsule that fits onto an AKG 451EB microphone, the CK4.

He has looked on Google without luck. Does anyone know if the BBC ever used that capsule and if one is for sale?

Hello, I was a Tech Op on TO22 in 1965 and joined BH London.
I parlayed my world-class training at the BBC into a freelance recording career and ended up in Canada where I am now retired. I'd love to hear from anyone on TO22 and was trying to contact a lecturer at the time Chris Daubney.
Thanks.

This week's TVBEurope 'magazine' (Aug 10th, 2023 edition) has an article entitled "Everything we know about: ADM-OSC, S-ADM and the delivery of next-generation audio". [Not sure the 'we' includes us!] https://www.tvbeurope.com/business/tvbeurope-august-2023-issue-now-available

However, ...

It consists of an interview (by Kevin Emmott) with the BBC R&D’s Matt Firth about how BBC R&D used the recent Eurovision Song Contest as a testing ground for 'next generation audio' (NGA), and where it might all go next.

It seems "There’s been a quiet revolution in television sound - and it’s all about the objects." [Please, no further references to 'big, round, sphericals!]

Given the many postings that were made by various BBC Engineers on Facebook regards the audio from the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the subsequent audio events, leading up to the recent Eurovision Song Contest from Liverpool, I'm sure that many will 'enjoy' this article.

And then - in the same issue - there's another article ("All aboard the MIXBUS" , pp14 - 18) about the ESG itself, where Conrad Fletcher and Andy Tapley offer considerable technical insight into the hardware that was used to provide the Eurovision feeds from Liverpool.

"In his role as Sound and Technical Director of BBC StudioWorks, Andy Tapley is responsible for specifying all the audio equipment in the studios at BBC TVC, Kelvin Hall in Glasgow and Elstree. He has chosen Studer Vista X consoles for all three facilities because he believes them to be the best for music mixing."

I can remember as an audio assistant back in 1966 pushing, sorry tracking, a "specially-built" wooden cart alongside the camera dolly up and down Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh during a recording of the White Heather Club whilst the great George Chisholm played trombone. The cart was equipped with 3 radio mic receivers that looked like they might have been supplied by Proops or somesuch from Totenham Court Road. It all worked somehow!
Dave.

Designed in the 1950s, it still gets 'rave reviews'

Here, for example.

"Designed by D.E.L. Shorter and H.D. Harwood of the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) in the mid-1950s, the lip mic was designed to deliver broadcast quality speech while rejecting a high level of background noise........

This oddball microphone has been in constant production ever since its introduction more than 60 years ago by British STC. the Coles 4104 is a child of the 1950s, it remains a valuable tool for on-location mobile audio. There is a good reason it is still used by news organizations throughout the world."
